Manual Therapies

I have 30 years of experience in medical massage, manual traction, and joint mobilization in addition to Lymph Drainage Therapy, Myofascial Release and Craniosacral Therapy, which are described seperately.

Medical massage is applied to a specific body part (for example only the right shoulder) to improve muscular balance where a joint is painful due to uneven forces working on it.  Once balance is improved by releasing excess tension in the tight muscle group, then strengthening the weaker muscles can be done more effectively and with less pain, preventing further damage to the joint.

Manual traction assists in stretching and relaxing the spine, applying just as much force as needed to get the desired results without triggering counter-productive protective tension in the back or neck muscles. My hands give me instant feedback as the body responds from moment to moment. I adjust the amount and direction of traction instantly as the changes occur for maximum benefit.

Gentle joint mobilization is applied when the joint capsule itself has become inflexible through inflammation, scar tissue, or chronic irritation. I do not use any forceful manipulation in my treatments. I leave that to the osteopaths and chiropractors who have a much more comprehensive education in that area than I do. In my world view, team work is essential.
